Massachusetts 2020 is a non-profit foundation focused on expanding educational and economic opportunities for children and families across Massachusetts.
Massachusetts 2020 was founded in 2000 by Chris Gabrieli, a civic and business entrepreneur, and Jennifer Davis, former Executive Director of the Mayor of Boston’s 2:00-to-6:00 After-School Initiative and Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education. Massachusetts 2020’s initial efforts have focused on expanding after-school and summer learning opportunities for children across the Commonwealth.
Massachusetts 2020 designed and now manages for Boston’s After-School for All Partnership the After-School Literacy Coaching Initiative (LCI). The LCI seeks to enable the integration of high-impact learning activities into programs by providing program staff across Boston the opportunity to participate in intensive on-site coaching from literacy experts over the course of a full school year. Sites also receive curriculum materials and book collections to build and grow program libraries. The LCI operates through a collaboration of ReadBoston, Boston Plan for Excellence and Boston Public Schools, and the support of seven public and private funders. The sites are also participating in a comprehensive evaluation measuring the impact of the coaching on after-school staff capacity and, in turn, on children’s engagement in learning activities and academic performance. This initiative, launched in October of 2003, is supporting 20 after-school programs in Boston in the 2004-2005 school year.
Grant deadline: May 26, 2006. Expanded Learning Time School-Community Partnerships Grant Program Massachusetts 2020 has announced a new grant opportunity for community based organizations to apply for partnership grants with Expanded Learning Time (ELT) schools. The request for proposals calls for joint proposals from the 18 ELT schools and one or more partner community organizations for integrated programming. External organizations might include after-school and youth development programs, arts and cultural institutions, health and mental health agencies, and higher education institutions. The grants are two-year awards made directly to partner organizations to support their work with ELT schools. These can be existing partnerships or the funding can be used to create a new partnership. The funds will be awarded directly to the partner organizations to support their work with their partner ELT schools.
