A Reluctant Fundraiser Rises to the Challenge
A social worker-turned-executive director at an agency serving Asian and Asian-American seniors tells article author Rona Fernandez how he came to embrace grassroots fundraising. He talks about cultural dynamics that contributed to his resistance to asking directly for large gifts and what enabled him to be successful in building individual donor support for his agency.

Administrative Management Capacity in Out-of-School Time Organizations: An Exploratory Study
To run out-of-school time (OST) programs most effectively, organizations need strong managerial and administrative capabilities, from sound budgeting and human resources practices to carefully planned-for technology. As this Wallace-commissioned study of 16 high quality OST providers in New York and Chicago finds, however, even the best performing OST organizations often suffer from administrative and managerial constraints. The shortcomings are not so severe that these non-profits face collapse, the report says, but the effects are felt: front-line staffers are often called on to perform administrative work, for example, and executives, consumed by day-to-day responsibilities, feel limited in their ability to manage programs strategically. The report describes in detail the administrative and managerial challenges confronting OST organizations and recommends possible solutions for OST leaders, public and private funders, and other interested parties.

Cost of Quality: Out-of-School Time Calculator
Along with preparing a report on OST program costs, researchers worked in conjunction with The Wallace Foundation to create an online "Out-of-school time cost calculator" to help users calculate the costs of various options for high quality OST programs. This calculator will help budget for programming that aims high: to cultivate children's talents, lift their self-confidence, improve their social skills, increase their engagement with school-or decrease the likelihood of risky behavior. The calculator lets users know what questions to ask, provides an easy-to-understand analysis of the data entered and offers further ideas and resources.
Developing and Managing Volunteer Programs
This resource emphasizes that, for the organization and its volunteers to benefit the most from each other, volunteers should be managed as part of an overall, systematic program, somewhat similar to the systematic approach that should be used to managing employees. Some of the topics covered are the roles of volunteer manager, legal and risk considerations, management policies and procedures, volunteer screening and volunteer staff relations.
Donation Dashboard
The Berkeley Center for New Media recently launched a Donation Dashboard to help donors choose causes and organizations to support. Similar to commercial Web sites that recommend movies, music, and books to users, the site allows visitors to rate nonprofits, analyzes the ratings, and generates giving suggestions based on a donor's preferences. The suggestions are provided in a pie chart that can be saved for future reference. Currently in beta, the site includes information on approximately seventy organizations.
